April 20th, 2024 – Concerto I In-Person Preliminary Round

• The Preliminary Round is a screening round in Video Submission format.
• Registration deadline for this round is April 20th, 2024. Video submission and payment of the application and registration fees must be completed by this date.
• Late entrance is accepted until April 25th with a $10 late fee.

May 18th, 2024 – Concerto I In-Person Final Round

• The Final Round is in Live In-Person or Live Monitored Recording format.
• Registration deadline for this round is May 1st, 2024.
• Late entrance is accepted until May 5th with a $20 late fee.

Differences between Live In-Person and Live Monitored Recording

• For contestants who are unable to compete in person, we offer the Live Monitored Recording. This is a hybrid format in which you will record your performance in the comfort of your home (or other suitable location) while one of our judges supervises the recording session via a Zoom session.
• Live Monitored Recording combines the high-quality video and audio of a camera recording with the authenticity of a live Zoom session.
• You will need two devices to participate in the competition using the Live Monitored Recording format; one to record your performance, and another to provide the Zoom session.
• Once the recording is complete and the Zoom session has ended, contestants will need to immediately send us their video. Since high quality video recording tend to be rather large, we highly recommend uploading them via our WeTransfer account at https://iapmt.wetransfer.com/.
• In order to authenticate your video recording, the judge will compare it with their Zoom recording to make sure that the two recordings are a perfect match.

May 18th, 2024 – Winners’ Concert and Awards Ceremony

• The Winners’ Concert and Awards Ceremony will be held in Munson Hall at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California.

May 31st, 2023 – Concerto II Online Competition Deadline

• This is an online competition in video submission format which consists of 1 round only.

June-August 2024 – Special Award Winners’ Concerts

• The Special Award Winners’ Concert will be held at Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo, California-June 2024
• International Concert Tour- Europe July-August 2024

• The concerto competition is open to Piano, Strings, Winds, Brass, Voice and Guitar.
• Formal attire is required for all rounds.

Divisions

There are a total of 17 divisions. Divisions 1-13 are based upon the contestant’s birth year:

Divisions 14-17 have no age limit and are as follows:

• Division 14 • Amateur • Non-Music degree holder who works in a non-music related field.
• Division 15 • Collegiate • Holds a bachelor’s degree or is studying towards one.
• Division 16 • Master • Holds a master’s degree or is studying towards one.
• Division 17 • Professional • Holds a DMA degree, is studying towards one.

Composition

• There are 3 levels: Future Star (Levels 4-8), Expert Musician (Level 9-Advanced) and Virtuosic Artist (Complete Concerto).
• Future Star and Expert Musician levels: any 1 movement from a standard concerto.
• Virtuosic Artist level: any complete standard concerto.
• All music must be performed from memory (except for Winds and Brass).
• For the Preliminary round, playing with an accompanist is not mandatory.
• For the Final Round, Contestants are strongly encouraged to perform with and provide their own accompanist, as well as providing a PDF copy of the score for the judges.
• The decision of the judges is final and irrevocable. Judging is based on performance standards.

Preliminary Round Time Limits

• Future Star and Expert Musician levels: up to 3 minutes.
• Virtuosic Artist levels: up to 7 minutes.
• Contestants may play various segments of their piece which showcase their abilities and talent to the judges, within the allotted time limit.

Final Round Time Limits

• Future Star and Expert Musician levels: up to 10 minutes
• Virtuosic Artist level: up to 20 minutes
• For Future Star and Expert Musician levels, contestants must be prepared to perform the entire movement (including cadenza if there is one). It is within the judge’s sole discretion to listen to any part of the movement within the time limit.
• For the Virtuosic Artist level, contestants must be prepared to perform the entire concerto.

You are allowed to perform pieces that are longer than the specified time limit. However, it’s important to know that the judges will stop your performance once the time limit is reached. Rest assured, this will not have any impact on how your performance is evaluated or the final results.

Application Fee

• Fee must be paid at the time of online registration otherwise the registration will be considered incomplete. Once the application has been received and accepted, no refunds will be made.
• In addition to the entrance fees, there is a one-time $15 registration fee for first time participants of the IAPMT.

Concerto I Preliminary and Final Round Fees

• Future Star and Expert Musician levels: Preliminary Round fee is $30, while the Final Round fee is $100.
• Virtuosic Artist level: Preliminary Round fee is $50, while the Final Round fee is $200.

Concerto II Online Fees

• Future Star and Expert Musician levels: Entrance fees is $70
• Virtuosic Artist level: Entrance fees is $120

All winners will receive medals and certificates. In addition, cash prizes will be awarded to 1st place winners in the Virtuosic Artist divisions.

• Grand Prize Winners: Five grand prize winners will be awarded $1,000 each, sponsored by Kim’s Piano. They will also have the opportunity to perform with the IAPMT Philharmonic Orchestra at the Soka Performing Arts Center on August 19th-20th, 2023 and attend a master class conducted by world-renowned musicians.
• Grand Prize Winner from the Virtuosic Artist division will also receive a full $1,600 scholarship for the Montecito International Music Festival (Session 3, July 6th-17th) and an opportunity to perform with the Montecito International Festival Orchestra at Cal Baptist University.
• Special Award Winners from Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello disciplines will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the Montecito International Music Festival (Session 3, July 6th-17th), and they will be invited to plat with the Montecito International Festival Orchestra at Cal Baptist University.
• Kim’s Piano Special Prize: an $800 Jansen Artist Bench will be awarded to the piano teacher of the Grand Prize winner in the piano category.
• Future Star Artist division: 1st-5th Place Winners will be awarded medals and certificates.
• Expert Musician and Virtuosic Artist divisions: 1st-4th Place Winners will be awarded medals and certificates.
• Selected 1st Place Winners of the Concerto I will be invited to perform at the Winners’ Concert and Awards Ceremony on May 28th, 2023 at Munson Hall, Azusa Pacific University.

• Participants need to announce their full name, birthyear, division and category at the beginning of each video.
• Videos must clearly show the contestant’s face and provide a clear view of the keyboard/instrument, hands, and feet (for instruments with pedals). A tripod for your recording device will likely be necessary and can be easily purchased from online merchants.
• You may use any recording device you wish. Smartphones generally have better cameras than tablets or laptops.
• Videos must be whole, uninterrupted takes with no distractions or background noise.
• Post-Production (Splicing, Editing, etc.) of the video or audio if strictly forbidden and will lead to disqualification.
• Formal and appropriate attire must be worn, otherwise the video may be rejected.

Video Submission

• Please edit the filenames of the videos so that they contain the contestant’s full name, birthyear, division, title of the song, and composer’s full name.
• Visit https://iapmt.wetransfer.com/ and add all of your videos to the transfer. For the title, please provide the contestant’s name, birthyear, level, and category.
• The IAPMT maintains copyright of all videos, audio, and photographs taken during the competition and retains legal usage rights of said videos, audio, and photographs.
